If you believe that you have become a victim of identity theft, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises you to take immediate steps to protect yourself from further problems that may arise. These steps include calling the companies where the fraud occurred as soon as possible, placing an alert with any one of the three credit bureaus and filing a report with the FTC. Since the individual who stole your identity may use it to break more laws, you may also want to consider filing a report with your local police department.
