How to Get a VAT Number

For those who are selling goods in Europe, it’s critical to have an understanding of value-added tax. It isn’t uncommon for those who are making sales to forgo the VAT, and this is a mistake. Here are some guidelines you should follow for how to get a VAT number.

Registering for a VAT Number

Under most circumstances, businesses can complete their registration for a VAT number online. If there’s a group of companies or a partnership working together, then it’s possible to complete a registration using one VAT number. In doing so, you’ll be creating a VAT account online (which is also referred to as a gateway government account) for the VAT registration number.

Send in a VAT1 Form

If you’re unable to complete an online registration for the VAT, fill out the VAT1 form. When using this form, you’ll have to print it out to fill it out by hand and send it through the post office. Use this form if you’re applying for registration exceptions, as well as for business divisions. You can also use this form to join the agricultural flat rate scheme.

Receiving Your VAT Number

Once you have registered online or sent your form through the post office, it should take approximately 30 working days to receive your EU VAT registration number. However, be prepared for it to take longer. You can use a VAT number finder to help you determine the status of your registration.

Appointing an Agent for VAT Submissions

You’ll be using your VAT online account for submitting VAT returns to HMRC (HM Revenue and Customs). If you would like someone else to deal with HMRC on your behalf, you can appoint an agent or accountant to submit your VAT returns.

Getting a VAT If You’re Outside of Europe

For those who are non-EU business owners, it isn’t possible for you to conduct business in any of the 28 member states unless you apply for a VAT number. Select a specific EU country and complete registration through the national VAT MOSS. Input your company and banking information. From there, you’ll enter your personal contact information and company history. After you’ve reviewed all the information for accuracy, submit it and wait approximately 30 business days to receive your VAT number in the USA or other country.
